Hap Hazard

On a white and aqua wave patterned background the following words are printed in a medium gray script: "Procrasti-KNIT-er: one who defers all other activities besides knitting".
Pattern: an idea from my own head; Planxty Hap by Síle Maureen (sample needs blocking; pattern not yet published)

Started: May 30, 2018

Finished: July 2, 2021

Made for: Síle aka me/ sample in a blockable fiber

Yarn: Briggs & Little Heritage (100% wool; 215yds = 113g)
  • 4.78 hanks/540 g of "55 Violet" = 1,027.43 yds
Needle size: 6.5mm/ US 10 ½

Notes & photos:
May 10, 2018: I've been meaning to get around to this! Oy, better late than not at all! Wool bought today; 5 hanks of B&L Heritage in 55 Violet :) Sooooooo pretty:
Sunlit hanks of vibrant purple wool.
(Note: used 879yds of acrylic worsted for the original)

May 11, 2018: Woot! Getting this typed out and charted finally. Bit of teeaking going on in the lace set up.

May 30, 2018: It's barely 6am, I haven't slept, and I want to knit. All my current WIPs are downstairs and I'm not up to going down yet. So, I'm winding the first hank into a ball and going to start this beauty! Yeah, cuz I have nothing on any other needles... :D
And so it begins:
A ball of vibrant purple wool rests next to a circular knitting needle
Roughly 178 rows left in the center:
A small triangle of garter stitch knitting in progress on a knitting needle.

June 8, 2018: I have just reached the 83st inc row of the center; 17 rows left before the decs! These rows are getting quite long lol

The 85sts row:

June 9, 2018: Participated in CBC NL Weekend AM's radio kip this morning for WWKIP Day. Also have joined in the 2nd ball of this yummy purple wool. Am at the 75sts dec row now

WWKIP Day shot while listening to CBC NL Weekend AM's radio kip:
A large garter stitch triangle of vibrant purple yarn, laid on a bed with possibly a leg under it.

June 10, 2018: Center complete! :) It measures 19 ¾ inches along each side. Onto the borders! :)
A large purple square of knitting laid out on a wooden floor. It's not possible to really see the stitches at the angle and distance of the camera.

Trying to pick-up the sts for the borders and my fixed circular needle has separated from the cord :( Gonna need to get some crazy glue before I get any further with this one

June 17, 2018: After regluing the needle end to the cord, this is back on the go!
In progress photo of a purple shawl with what might be Old Shale patterning on a large circular knitting needle. The work is for the most part bunched up but the area directly below the needle is fairly easy to see the fans to the pattern.

July 1, 2018:  Joined in the 3rd ball right near the end of rnd 17 of the border

March 24, 2020: Was going to pick this up tonight and work on it. The frigging needle separated and I nearly lost about 15sts, triggering me to fall apart :'''( I'm unbelievably stressed right now and all I wanted was the comfort of my "stress-away" pattern and my favorite wool in my hands. This pattern saved my sanity when I needed it before: I need that saving again right now, as do many others. Sistwerp's anxiety is through the roof and I'm needed to be the strong one right now; too bad it's a rapidly crumbling facade :'''(

This needle is cursed :''''(
About 15 knitting stitches on a circular needle tip that isn't connected to the needle's cord any longer while the rest are on the opposite tip and cord in the knitter slash photographer's lap.

April 18, 2020: Need to count the sts in one section; lace isn't lining up properly for the rnd I thought I was working on. (Note to self: actually use the progress tracker in your chartin g program instead of trying to remember where you are on umpteen projects)

later: Counted 83sts per section which meant I was to work rnd 33, not rnd 21. Oy vey. Now on rnd 40 and just shy of  ¼ through the rnd I need to join in ball 4.

May 6, 2021: When all is a mess reach for my comfort knitting! I have a colposcopy and uterine biopsy this morning. I'm absolutely in a panic over it. Plus ya know, finding out I wasted another 4+ years on a guy who isn't on the same page about things as I am. Fun week, NOT. Alright, off I go to the hospital for a procedure with a dr I've never even talked to before. Fun!

Pic before I dash off. I've missed this lace:
Purple lace shawl spilling out from a green project bag. The lace isn't very well defined as the shawl is bunched together.

May 7, 2021: As if yesterday wasn't bad enough, Jakey had a seizure a few minutes ago and I had to go wake up K with that news. Yeah, it's another day for comfort knitting. Big time

later: Took Jakey into the vet's after he had a second seizure. I'm praying with every st the floofy one is going to be ok. What a god-awful week this has been!

May 10, 2021: Jakey's home and fine other than having a catheter in til Friday. This is still my go-to project right now; comfort. Am around halfway through rnd 25 of chart B and will need to join in ball 5 once it's wound :)
Close up view of the section being worked on with the shirt yarn tail sticking out where the new ball of wool will be joined in. The lace of the border and that of the corner panel are fairly clearly shown.

June 5: Ok, I'm at rnd 3 of chart C. I'm not sure how far into chart C I'll get with the wool I have left; it's taking quite a bit more than the original sample did. We'll see what happens!

June 18: Working on this while waiting to be seen by dr at ER. I've decided on a simple picot cast-off to finish the shawl off. Not traditional but neither is my corner treatment ;)

June 21: Off to a dr's appointment and this is going along for the ride. I had to take back 1 rnd repeat (6 rnds) in order to have enough wool to cast off. A little under a half of a rnd left to tink and then I can restart the picot cast-off. I was really liking how it looked on Saturday before I accepted that I didn't have enough wool left to complete it. Note to self: always buy the extra hank! If you don't need it for your design you can make a hat or mittens for someone at some  point !

June 29: What a gloriously sunny day. Not too warm either, around 17°C so I sat outside and worked on this a bit after I took a couple photos, and then I took a few more! Don't say I didn't warn you:
The shawl somewhat spread out on the back deck in the full on sunshine.

A focused in shot capturing the picot edge on a section of Old Shale, and a bit of the Cat's Paw panel from one of the corners.

Another shot of the shawl with the sides already cast-off spread out, this one with one of the corner panels taking center stage.

Close up of Old shale with picot edging.

Focus on a corner panel and the picots along it's wider edge.

A corner panel bordered by waves of Old Shale and the picots edging both lace patterns.

July 2: Finished casting off :) "Just" need to block it. And get the final yardage. Unblocked photo:
