Sunset Fana

White and soft orange hat in bands of Scandinavian patterns.

Pattern: Fana Cap by Charlene Schurch (published in her book "Hats On! 31 Warm and Winsome Caps for Knitters")

Finished: August 9, 2008

Made for: Nat

Yarn: Bernat Satin (100%; 163yds = 100g)
  • 163 yds in "Silk" (white)
  • 163 yds in "Sunset" (orange)
  • 326 yds total (skein size has changed since project was created)
Notes: AKA the Creamsicle Hat! I should also add that this was a real challenge for me, as I have horrible gauge when doing colorwork. I think it took me 2 weeks to knit this, as I was being careful with it!
Nat absolutely loved this; she insisted on wearing it during dance class!!

Autumn in the Highlands

Close up in progress photo of the lacy cable stitch in this project.

Pattern: lace is from Glasgow Lace by Sharon Shoji  (published in Interweave Knits, Fall 2006)

Finished: September 2007

Made for: Nat

Yarn: Red Heart Soft Touch (100% acrylic; 290yds = 144g)
  • 2 skeins in "Pumpkin" = 562 yds (ball size has changed in intervening years)
Notes: I used the lace pattern from “Glasgow Lace” (InterweaveKnits) to make a capelet for my favorite former Highland dancer :) I used Seed st for all the borders. Wish I'd gotten a photo of the finished piece; Nat loved it

Niamh the Irish dancer

Brown haired doll in an orange dress with blue and red embroidery, and a white lace collar.

Pattern: Bridget and Paddy Knitted Friends by Carol A. Anderson of Cottage Creations

Finished: September 2006

Made for: Nat

Needle size: 4.5mm/ US 7

Notes: This one needed a bit more changing, at least colorwise! If I knit Niamh the way I did the others, she’d have been our Halloween dancer: black dress with bright orange accents. Orange with black did nothing for her either. I went with orange dress, royal and red accents & I think she’s lovely. More importantly, Nat adored her!
