Knotwork & Lace Capelet

Capelet laid out showing all of the cable patterns and the lace edging.

Pattern: my idea using patterns from various other patterns as follows -
  • wide lace edging from Ingrid's Bridal Knot Baby Shawl by Bridget Rorem (published in the book "A Gathering of Lace")
  • knotwork motif from Down Home Two-Color Throw Pillow by Melissa Leapman (published in her book "Continuous Cables"
  • cable panel from St. Ciaran by Alice Starmore (published in her book "Aran Knitting")
  • knotwork motif from Trud by Elsebeth Lavold (published in her book "Book One: TheViking Knits Collection")
  • small edging from various baby knits patterns by Debbie Bliss
Finished: February 2009

Made for: Síle aka Me

Yarn: Bernat Satin (100% acrylic; 200yds = 100g)
  • 3 skeins of "Lapis"; 489 yds total (skein size has changed since the project was created)
Needle size: 4.5mm/ US 7

Notes: This one was for me, so went over and above the others! The Braid Panel is from “A Gathering of Lace” (Ingrid’s Bridal Shawl). The Simple Edging is found on several Debbie Bliss baby patterns. The side gores contain the motif from “Continuous Cables” by Melissa Leapman (Down Home Two-Color Throw Pillow). The side panels are from Alice Starmore’s “St. Ciaran’s Shawl” (I mirrored these). The back/center gore contains “Trud”, a motif from Elsebeth Lavold.

Additional photos:
Close up: the knotwork motif from Down Home Two-Color Throw Pillow worked in one color as the front left (and right) decreasing section
Knotwork motif from Down Home Two-Color Throw Pillow worked in the center of the front left decreasing panel. The edge stitches form a braid cable where they join. To the left of this section is a 4 strand braid cable, worked straight, and to the right is the panel from St. Ciaran

Close up: the two lace edgings being worked together. These are perpendicular to the rest of the capelet. The wide edging is a lace interwoven pattern as if a cable were turned in lace. The small edging is delicate resembling leaves and runs along the long side of the wide one.
Started at the edgings, knit at the same time, the rest of the capelet was picked up and knit from the long side of wide lace and worked up

Close up: knotwork motif from Trud centered in the back decreasing section outlined on each side by two knit stitches that turn into a braid cable where they join near the neck edge.
Knotwork motif from Trud seen set in the center back decreasing section with the mirrored panels from St. Ciaran on either side

Close up: cabled panel from St. Ciaran between the front left and center back decreasing sections.
The left side St. Ciaran panel with the left front and center back decreasing sections on either side
