If At Feis You Don't Succeed, Treble Hop-back Again

The finished hat (laying flat) front view

Pattern: Treble Reel Toque by Síle Maureen (Link to Pattern Page 🔗)

Started: April 3, 2021

Finished: April 15, 2021

Made for: Himself/ Ilvermorny Quidditch

Yarn: Briggs & Little Heritage (100% wool; 215yds = 113g)
  • 0.787 (89g) hank of "46 Royal Blue" = 169.2 yds
Needle size: 4.5mm/ US 7

Notes & photos: It's Quidditch time at Ilvermorny again! This match is focused on "Aguamenti", a water producing charm, and runs from April 3rd to April 15th. And what says water better than a blue cable knit hat? Nothing that I can think of!

This is a replacement hat for Himself. I designed the original sample as his Yuletide present a few years ago, and unfortunately it was stolen (along with his wool mittens!) while he and his bandmates were on tour in cold northern Alberta and BC in February 2020. So the poor man needs a new hat!

I've given this project a completely bad dance pun title, furthering my blend of magick, knitting, and Irishdance

later: winding the hank into a ball now that the hockey game is over. I can probably get some of the ribbing out of the way tonight too. This hat starts with a small amount of ribbing knit in the round, then adds in short-rows to make the back ribbing longer (to protect the wearer's ears and neck), and then finishes off the ribbing in the round. Then comes the cables and moss st of the body, which is almost mindless once it's set up. This is one of my favorite patterns that I've designed, and I've only knit 2 of them; the original sample and another.
A large ball of blue wool sits on a computer desk with a set of four double-pointed needles, and a yellow bulb shaped stitch marker in front of it. We also see a glass to the left, a bit if the computer screen above, and part of the computer keyboard below.

4/04: 4 rnds of 2x2 ribbing done :) Next up: the short rows!
In progress: stitches arranged on 3 double-pointed needles with 4 rounds of ribbing completed.

4/05: short-rows finished!
The completed ribbing, showing the curve from the short-rows that makes the back section longer.

4/09: getting there! I've got roughly an inch done on the hat body
Several rounds of cables and moss stitch panels are visible above the knit 2, purl 2 ribbing. Also can see how the ribbing at the back is longer than it is at the front.

4/12: Fortunately I've been feeling better the last couple days and have nearly 4 inches knit above the ribbing out of the needed 5 inches. Only a few more days to get this done for Quidditch! My Warrior Cats are quite a bit behind last I saw, so I need to get this done and submitted asap! (Phone is dead so no photo right now)

4/14: Just finished the last rnd 5 needed to complete the body :) All that remains are the 15 rnds of the crown shaping :) I can get those done later today and have my score in before Thursday's deadline :)
An in progress piece of cabled knitting with a tape showing the length from the top of the ribbing to just below where the needle sits is 5 inches long.

4/15: All done as of 5:26am :)
